Eh, I am somewhat embarrassed because this is turning into a Hello Kitty blog rather than a cat blog. I promise I will write about something different next time :P. As you know from my last post, I have eaten at a few Hello Kitty themed locations. Sometimes the food is good – others, not so much. Unfortunately the Hello Kitty cafe in Hongdae, Seoul fell strongly into the latter category! I think this is the only time I have ever left a dessert uneaten. It was a waffle too, which is usually yummy.
Whatever about the food, the building certainly pulls out all the stops when it comes to decor. Even the exterior of the building is completely pink and features a giant version of the famous feline’s hair bow. It’s been a few years since my visit now so I’m not sure if this restaurant is still around. If it is, I believe it’s been completely renovated. To be honest, I think it was needed. The inside was covered with “graffiti” – where customers had left their mark in pen all over the walls. This is a common thing in cafes in Korea and it usually looks quite good and arty. However there was something about the vivid pink and black and blue scrawls that clashed horribly.
I visited with a friend and we both ordered the waffle along with a drink. Sadly the waffles were super hard and dense. Nothing like legitimate Belgian waffles. Perhaps my standards are too high but honestly I could have broken a window with that thing. The macha latte I had wasn’t great either. We wandered around for a while taking photos but left disappointed. There are many nicer Hello Kitty cafes in the world (the one in Singapore’s Changi airport is my favorite…maybe I will share my review when you have recovered from this sickly sweet content!). There are also many nicer cafes in Seoul. So I would give this place a miss, even as a big cat lover and Hello Kitty fan.
